Barnevelder

Description

The Barnevelder breed has been around for years. It was originally developed in the late 19^th to early 20^th century in the Barneveld region of Holland. This is where it developed its name. It was created through years of crossing traditional Dutch breeds with Asian breeds and some Orpingtons. The Barnevelder was officially recognized right before WWI at the first World Poultry Congress of the World Poultry Science Association. This breed was also recognized by the American Standard of Perfection in 1991. The American Poultry Association only recognizes the double laced color of this breed.

The Barnevelder is a single comb chicken breed. They also come in many different colors including the double laced, which is the most popular, along with blue laced, white, or black plumage.

The Barnevelder is known for being a quiet bird that doesn’t mind being confined. These two traits make it an excellent choice for a backyard pet in the city limits.  They are also known to shy away from human contact so this may not be a good thing for those of you who have kids and want to hold them. The Barnevelders are also good foragers which are nice if you want to help control the bugs in the yard. All in all, this is a great breed for those who want to have eggs and a quiet breed at the same time.
